Ambassador Ramtane Lamamra is an Algerian politician and diplomat who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria from 2013 until 2017. From 2008 until 2013, Ambassador Lamamra was the Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union. During his career, Ambassador Lamamra has served as Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and in other senior roles at organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency and the UN Industrial Development Organization. Additionally, he was the Permanent Secretary of the Algerian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and served as the Ambassador of Algeria to Austria, Portugal and the United States. Moreover, Ambassador Lamamra has held leading roles in mediation efforts in several conflicts in Africa, including those in Liberia and Mali.
Currently, Ambassador Lamamra is the AU High Representative for Silencing the Guns in Africa by 2020 and serves as a member of the UN Secretary-General’s High-level Advisory Board on Mediation.
