Cedric de Coning

Senior Advisor and Chief Editor of the COVID-19 Conflict & Resilience Monitor

Cedric de Coning is a Senior Advisor, Editor-in-Chief of the African Journal on Conflict Resolution and Chief Editor of the COVID-19 Conflict & Resilience Monitor at ACCORD. He has been with ACCORD since 1997. He is also a Research Professor with the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI). His research draws on complexity theory to deepen our understanding of how social-ecological systems adapt under pressure, and he applies this perspective to international and African conflict resolution practice and the climate-peace nexus. He holds a PhD from the Department of Philosophy at the University of Stellenbosch. He has served in a number of advisory capacities for the African Union and United Nations, including as advisor to the head of the AU’s Peace Support Operations Division, and on the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board for the Peacebuilding Fund. He has co-edited 10 books, of which the most recent two are on ‘Adaptive Mediation’ (2022) and ‘Adaptive Peacebuilding’ (2023).
