ACCORD Senior Researcher Karanja Mbugua attended the Implementing the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in Southern Africa forum from 17-18 September at Kopanong Hotel at Benoni, Johannesburg.
The forum was organised by the Centre on Global Counter-Terrorism Cooperation of Washington DC, United States and the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) of Pretoria, South Africa, with financial support from the government of Netherlands. Among key participants were experts from the UN, relevant regional and sub-regional organisations, representatives of the Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (SAARPCO) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states, civil society groups, research institutions and representatives from Netherlands.
The forum discussed the UN global counter-terrorism strategy in a sub-regional context considering the potential benefits and challenges it offers for counter-terrorism capacities and contributions of the African Union (AU), SADC, the African Centre for the Study and Research on Terrorism (ACSRT) and other relevant multilateral institutions engaged in Southern Africa, as well as improving the sub-regional preparedness to counter terrorism. Mr. Mbugua presented on the role of civil societies in promoting the strategy implementing in Southern Africa.
