Building self-learning structures through experiential connections.

ACCORD conducted virtual one-on-one coaching and mentoring sessions to guide the learning process and to increase the level of awareness of 16 women representing local NGOs and CBOs. These participants continue to benefit from ACCORD’s Capacity Building Initiative that started in early 2021.

The one-on-one coaching sessions were centered on unpacking the challenges encountered in the personal experience of the famous American media personality and host, Oprah Winfrey. The discussions reflected on how she overcame her challenges to become a better version of herself.

Participants related their own experiences to the structure of learning from the lessons they learned from Oprah. Participant, Ms. Gcinile Ngwenya, representing GVN Wellness Centre shared her own experience, and her belief in remaining optimistic, while using courage and self-awareness as important elements to overcome difficulties. Another participant, Ms. Sabina Taderera representing EarthLife, shared that Oprah’s experience made her realize how easy it is for one to neglect themselves, and that finding herself was one of the life lessons she would like to adopt.

Ms. Alison Lazarus, lead facilitator on the initiative, went on to guide the participants on dealing with both constructive and destructive criticism in the workplace. The sessions aimed to allow the participants to reflect on their personal and organizational awareness in order to develop skills on how to become their own life coaches like Opera Winfrey.

ACCORD continues in its efforts to enhance women’s leadership, accountability and good governance skills.
