Between January and June 2006, ACCORD’s Training for Peace (TfP) Programme assisted the Peace Support Operations Division of the African Union (AU-PSOD) in formulating a project document entitled a ‘Draft Framework for the Civilian Dimensions of the African Standby Force (ASF)’.
A process was thus set in motion to lay the ground work for the operationalization of the civilian and police aspects of the African ASF. An important highlight of this process was the convening of a Technical Experts Workshop hosted by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center (KAIPTC) in Accra, Ghana from 29 August – 1 September 2006. The objective of the workshop was to allow the relevant regional and international stakeholders an opportunity to consider, deliberate, and further refine the Framework Document.
As a follow up to these developments and in accordance with the guidelines set out in the project road map, the TfP Programme Advisor, Cedric de Coning, and the Senior Programme Officer, Yvonne Kasumba will attend a meeting at the AU PSOD from the 1-2 February 2007. This meeting is the first of several Task Tam Meetings that will be held in the earlier half of this year with the main aim of developing a comprehensive implementation plan for the various aspects of the Policy Framework Document.
