ACCORD’s Burundi Country Office, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, will conduct two separate three day workshops for the 23 National Commissioners of the Commission Nationale Terre et Autres Biens, at the Safari Gate Hotel in Bujumbura from 9-16 July 2007.
The first workshop will train the Commissioners in conflict analysis, prevention and management in relation to land conflict in Burundi, while the second workshop will cover Burundian legislation relating to land law.
The Commision Nationale des Terres et Autres Biens was established recently by the Government of Burundi to address widespread conflicts relating to land and other properties that have arisen following Burundi’s independence 45 years ago. The two participatory-style workshops will help the Commissioners assess whether land was illegally or legally granted to the relevant parties and to use mediation and dialogue to resolve disputes. In addition, ACCORD will train the Commissioners on how to communicate effectively, as well as how to build a culture of constructive conflict resolution and dialogue throughout the Provinces in which they will operate.
ACCORD has been contributing to the peace process in Burundi since 1995 and opened it’s first country office outside of South Africa in Burundi in 2003. In 2006 ACCORD awarded the Nation of Burundi the Africa Peace Award. ACCORD currently has three offices in Burundi.
