ACCORD’s Training for Peace (TfP) in Africa Programme was invited by the Kenya Peace Support Training Centre (KPSTC) to participate in their sixth United Nations (UN) Civilian Police training course. The training, conducted over a three week period, was held in Karen, Nairobi and the TfP Programme conducted the modules on conflict analysis, negotiation and mediation on 26 June 2006.
TfP ACCORD conducted this module for the Military Observers’ course earlier in March this year at the KPSTC, and the Programme has again been invited to conduct the same module for the eleventh UN Military Observers course in the programme’s continued support to the KPSTC. The module will be presented on 24 July 2006. The training courses are funded by the British East Africa Support Team based in Nairobi, Kenya, and TfP ACCORD provides it own resource personnel.
The primary purpose of the course is to prepare African Military Observers and Civilian Police Officers for duties as UN Military Observers and UN Civilian Police in any Peace Support Operation. TfP ACCORD’s role is to provide instruction in conflict management and negotiation skills using a participatory approach.
The TfP in Africa Programme works in the field of peacekeeping capacity building, and there are four partner organisations, the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) and ACCORD.
The TfP Programme is funded by the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the participation of programme personnel with the regional peacekeeping training centres is encouraged.
