ACCORD senior researcher Prof Jannie Malan contributes to The Oxford International Encyclopedia of Peace

Professor Jannie Malan, senior researcher at ACCORD and co-editor of the African Journal on Conflict Resolution, has contributed an article to The Oxford International Encyclopedia of Peace, a four-volume scholarly reference designated the CRS Book of the Year 2010 by the Council of the Conflict Research Society (CRS).

In his contribution, Africa: Peace Movements, Professor Malan finds that “[p]eace-oriented methods and movements from Africa function in a climate of fellow-human togetherness and interrelatedness. It is in this context that these concepts and procedures have to be understood and implemented. Groups and individuals in the rest of the world can indeed learn from Africa’s expertise…”.

With more than 850 entries, written and signed by leading scholars, The Oxford International Encyclopedia of Peace offers a comprehensive overview on peace and conflict. Key subjects covered include; world leaders, major events, organisations, theories and current events. The Encyclopedia was published in January 2010 by Oxford University Press.

The CRS Book of the Year was introduced in 2010, with the first recognition given to The Oxford International Encyclopedia of Peace. In a letter to the contributors, the Encyclopedia’s Editor in Chief Nigel J Young wrote, “We are proud of this achievement and believe that such recognition will further help to promote the existence of the four volumes as an ongoing, long-term educational, institutional resource – with future potential for enhancements and supplements.”
