ACCORD ramps up peacebuilding efforts

ACCORD’s African Peacebuilding Coordination Programme (APCP) will be conducting training sessions and workshops during July to September. This is tied to ACCORD’s aim of enhancing coherence and coordination of peacebuilding stakeholders through capacity-building initiatives.

Peacebuilding Training Course, Lubumbashi, DRC

A peacebuilding training course takes place in Lubumbashi, DRC for stakeholders involved in the peacebuilding process from July 19 – 23, 2010. The training will cover themes such as security sector reform, gender and peacebuilding, early warning and early response mechanisms, trauma healing, transitional justice, regional peacebuilding, negotiation and mediation.

The training course will be facilitated by resource persons from ACCORD, International Conference on the Great Lakes (IC/GLR), United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), government and civil society. The training session will familiarize participants to themes critical to sustainable peacebuilding and enable them to work better in their various areas of responsibilities.

Consultative Workshop, Juba, Sudan

The Programme will conduct a consultative workshop and scenario building exercise in Juba, Sudan from August 23 – 27, 2010. The workshop will bring together a wide range of stakeholders from the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), representatives from government, civil society, Intergovernmental Authority on Government (IGAD), African Union (AU), African Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank (WB). The workshop will focus on enhancing participants’ ability to actively contribute towards the peacebuilding process in Sudan. Sessions will address issues of land and resource conflict, negotiation, mediation, and early warning and early response mechanisms. The workshop will utilise in-depth group discussions and facilitated presentations by seasoned experts in the field of peacebuilding.

Regional Peacebuilding Workshop, Liberia

The African Peacebuilding Coordination Programme will be hosting its first regional peacebuilding workshop to discuss the current and emerging challenges in various regional peacebuilding endeavours in the Mano River Union (MRU).

This regional workshop From September 22 – 24 will bring together high-level stakeholders from Guinea-Conakry, Ivory Coast, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The workshop will discuss the regional challenges to peacebuilding and the linkages between national and regional peacebuilding endeavours. In addition, the workshop will identify areas of intervention and avenues through which the process of regional peacebuilding can be realized. Participants will comprise representatives from the four Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), United Nations Country Teams (UNCT), United Nation Missions, Government and Civil Society.
