In September, ACCORD will host a two-day expert seminar on the topic ‘Climate change and conflict: Where to for conflict-sensitive climate change adaptation in Africa?’ that will lead to a Policy & Practice Brief to be presented at COP17 in Durban in late November. ACCORD continues to conduct activities on climate and conflict, in order to highlight the need for conflict-sensitive climate change adaptation policies, practices and funding.
On 15 & 16 September 2011, practitioners and policy makers from across Africa and beyond, will gather in North Beach, Durban, to consider current climate change and conflict challenges and interventions in Africa, with a view to contributing to the development of conflict-sensitive adaptation and mitigation measures, and funding.
In addition to the publication of an edited volume of selected seminar papers in 2012, key seminar outcomes will be captured in the form of a Policy & Practice Brief, authored by Professor Pius Yanda, Director of the Institute of Resource Assessment at the University of Dar Es Salaam and ACCORD Senior Researcher Salomé Bronkhorst. The Policy & Practice Brief will be presented at a series of side events during the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or better known as COP17, which will take place from 28 November to 9 December 2011 in Durban. The parties to the convention have met annually since 1995 to assess progress made in dealing with climate change. The Durban meeting is especially significant as it will be one of the final opportunities to reach a legally binding deal on emissions, which should include the major emitters, to replace the Kyoto Protocol which expires at the end of 2012.
