In October 2020, ACCORD was appointed as a Board Member of the Global Compact on Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action (WPS-HA) in the context of the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the Generation Equality Forum (GEF), as well as the 20th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325).
ACCORD is represented on the board by Mrs Pravina Makan-Lakha in her capacity as Advisor on Women Peace and Security. Ms Makan-Lakha and Ms Marisha Ramdeen Programmes, ACCORD Programmes Co-ordinator participated in the Annual Board Meeting of the WPS-HA that took place virtually from 27 – 28 February 2024. The meeting reflected on the modalities of the Compact as well as on a more comprehensive revised reporting system that commenced in 2023 for members to better account for the progress made to monitor and evaluate their work in achieving the WPS Agenda’s key pillars on Participation, Protection, Prevention, and Relief and Recovery. Similarly, to previous years, the Compact focused on ways to widen the outreach of its work by ensuring that voices from the communities are reflected in the work of the Compact.
Key to the discussions included the new approaches to reporting that can better reflect the global efforts on the WPS agenda. The strategic engagements to increase the Compact’s work took into consideration ways in which to respond to ongoing conflicts and crises as it has a significant impact on women, marking 25 years of WPS in 2025, and discussions on the accountability report for 2024.
ACCORD will continue to advise and provide strategic guidance to the Compact, as well as continue its efforts to strengthen the role of women in conflict prevention, which is a key outcome of the WPS agenda.
