ACCORD, through its Training for Peace in Africa (TfP) Programme, attended and participated in the International Forum for the Challenges of Peace Operations, held in Geneva earlier this year. The forum brought the international community of leading policymakers, practitioners and academics in peace operations together in a dynamic, strategic and broad-based platform to discuss and provide insight on the many challenges in modern multidimensional peace operations.
The Training for Peace Programme at ACCORD (TfP/ACCORD) participated in the International Forum for the Challenges of Peace Operations, held in Geneva, Switzerland during 9-11 May earlier this year. The forum – supported by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), and the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) – gathered some 250 participants from more than 50 countries, including the five permanent members of the Security Council and the main troop contributors to UN peace operations, to address the broad themes of cooperation and coordination in the field of multidimensional peace operations. These themes were covered through a series of panel sessions and working groups, which also focused on various issues faced by the broad range of actors involved in peace operations, and took stock of recent developments at both the policy and field levels. ACCORD was represented by Zinurine Alghali, the Peacekeeping Unit Coordinator.
The forum provided an excellent opportunity for ACCORD to provide input and insight amongst the key actors present at the forum on the many challenges faced by modern multidimensional peace operations employed by the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU) and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in Africa, by highlighting context experiences and lessons from different mission areas in Africa. ACCORD’s contribution to the International Forum for the Challenges of Peace Operations conference fell within the broader TfP Programme objective of enhancing the understanding and implementation of a multidimensional and integrated approach to peace operations in Africa.
