ACCORD has met with a number of African Union (AU) and United Nations (UN) officials at the Training for Peace in Africa (TfP) Programme’s Annual General Meeting in March, to assess and highlight key issues and opportunities for collaboration between the various stakeholders towards further developing and strengthening the continental security architecture.
ACCORD attended the Second Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Training for Peace (TfP) Programme, which is now in its fourth phase, in Addis Ababa from 6-7 March earlier this year. The meeting was aimed at facilitating strategic discussion on common issues amongst TfP partners – most notably regarding the implementation of the programme’s 2011-2015 strategy – as well as bringing to the fore the progress that the partners have made. It provided further incentive for the ACCORD team to meet with representatives from the AU Peace and Security Department (PSD) and Peace Support Operations Division (PSOD), as well as the UN Office to the African Union (UNOA), to identify entry points and potential contribution by ACCORD in support of key organisational structures within the AU for the successful implementation of peace operations on the continent. ACCORD, represented by Ms Karishma Rajoo (Interventions Department Manager) and Mr Zinurine Alghali (Peacekeeping Unit Coordinator), took the opportunity to engage with a number of key officials from the AU and UN to assess opportunities for collaboration in support to the AU for the development and operationalisation of the Africa Peace and Security Architecture (APSA).
These meetings facilitated the establishment of partnerships within the AU Peace and Security Department as well as UNOAU, and provided an important opportunity to confirm the 2012 initiatives that the TfP programme will be implementing with the AU Peace Support Operations Division. Such initiatives are in line with the TfP Programme’s 2011-2015 strategic framework and goal hierarchy, which aims to contribute to the development of sustainable capacity and capability for peace operations in the UN, AU and REC/Regional Mechanisms (RMs).
