ACCORD’s Peacekeeping and Peacemaking Units, in partnership with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), held an AMISOM confidence-building workshop for the current and potential troops contributing countries (TCCs) at the Speke Resort and Conference Centre in Kampala, Uganda on 2-3 December 2009.
The workshop was officially opened by the Deputy Special Representative of the African Union Commission Chair, Hon. Wafula Wamunyinyi. It was also attended by the Ambassador of Somalia to Kenya, H.E. Ambassador Nur Ali Mohammed and the AMISOM Force Commander General Mugisha. Others in attendance were senior AMISOM staff from Nairobi and Mogadishu as well as media representatives from eight African countries, including Somalia, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria and Malawi.
The workshop focused on major themes such as understanding the conflict in Somalia; looking at international response to the conflict; challenges and opportunities facing AMISOM; AMISOM’s communication strategy and how AMISOM is perceived by the rest of the Continent. The workshop also proposed important recommendations on how AMISOM can enhance its communication strategy and work in Somalia. Other recommendations concerned how to enhance the support of AMISOM and other AU peacekeeping and peace enforcement missions in Africa.
