ACCORD conducts peacebuilding training in DRC

In its efforts to support the Peacebuilding work in Africa, The Peacebuilding Unit at ACCORD conducted a Peacebuilding Training in the Democratic Republic of Congo from 30 March to 03 April 2009. The training, held in the capital city of Kinshasa, brought together 30 stakeholders from the United Nations Mission and the United Nations Country Teams.

 In addition to this, there was representation from the government including the Office of the Vice President and civil society, including the National President of the governing civil society body in the country, PREGESCO.

The training focused on conflict analysis, peace and ceasefire agreements, negotiation and mediation as well as security sector reform (SSR), regional peacebuilding, and understanding peacebuilding. These sessions created an opportunity for discussion on the Peacebuilding Process to date and the various challenges encountered in the process. This provided a highly beneficial and valuable training which brought to the forefront Peacebuilding ideas, challenges and prospects in the DRC and on the Continent as a whole. The skills set and knowledge of participants were built upon and their capacities increased to assist them enhance their roles as peacebuilding actors in the DRC. ACCORD’s Deputy Director, Mr Jerome Sachane, hosted a social reception which was attended by the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to the DRC, Ms. Leila Zerrougui, and the Chief of Civil Affairs (MONUC), Mr John Bevan.
