As part of efforts to strengthen the mediation support capacity of the African Union (AU), the ACCORD Peacemaking Unit conducted Advanced Training in Mediation for AU staff from 24-26 November 2010 in Durban, South Africa. Participants represented the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, as well as a variety of liaison offices including those in Western Sahara, the Central African Republic, Sudan, Chad, Kenya and the Ivory Coast.
The overall objective of the training was to enhance the quality and outcomes of peace processes led by the AU. This was achieved through deepening the understanding of the AU staff on the theory and practice of mediation and through advancing the capacity and skills of the AU staff as mediation process experts to allow them to strategically and effectively guide and advise the mediation team throughout the mediation process.
The training was implemented under the AU Mediation Support Project funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland.
