Peacekeeping Analyst, Gustavo de Carvalho has returned from the United Nations in New York with a fresh outlook on tackling the peackeeping challenges in Africa. Gustavo attended a thematic debate entitled “UN Peacekeeping: looking into the future” held at the UN headquarters on 22 June. The debate was called by the President of the UN General Assembly to allow all member states, academics, Non-Governmental Organisations, and other stakeholders to engage in the discussions on strengthening peacekeeping operations.
The Peacekeeping Unit and ACCORD now have a better understanding on some of the most relevant peacekeeping issues that are currently being discussed at the UN Headquarters, including the increasing importance of the link between peacekeeping and peacebuilding.
This discussion has enhanced the capacity of ACCORD to understand and be part of strategic processes at the UN Headquarters level. Furthermore, this will enable the Peacekeeping Unit and the institution to respond and contribute more effectively to processes aimed at addressing peacekeeping challenges in Africa and beyond.
