ACCORD’s Training for Peace (TfP) Programme participated in the 3rd Annual African Standby Force (ASF) Training Implementation Workshop that was held from 04 – 05 February 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya. The workshop was aimed at developing an integrated (civilian, police and military) training implementation plan for the ASF for 2010 – 2011.
The workshop was organised by the African Union’s (AU’s) Peace Support Operations Division (PSOD) and attended by the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) / Regional Mechanisms (RMs); Training Centres of Excellence; civil society institutions; and AU partners and donors.
The workshop provided a forum for discussion between the AU and RECs as well as among the RECs/RMs. It also allowed the AU PSOD, as the coordinating mechanism that should provide guidance at the continental level for the ASF, to reiterate the objective of the workshop and the need for coherence and coordination between the AU and RECs/RMs as well as among RECs/RMs.
In his address, the Head of the AU PSOD, Mr Sivuyile Bam, stressed that the RECs/RMs should move beyond the presentation and harmonisation of their respective training and exercise programmes and to articulate and assess the relevance and impact of these activities on the development of the ASF
