ACCORD participates in APSTA consultative workshop

TfP/ACCORD participated in and chaired an APSTA Technical Committee Meeting (TCM) held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (hosted by the APSTA Secretariat at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) on 17 May 2009.

The purpose of the meeting was to:

  • Lay the ground work for a broader APSTA consultative workshop;
  • Gain greater clarity on the EU offer of support for African capacity building and to discuss how best that support can be appropriately channelled as against real needs and gaps on the continent; and
  • Deliberate further on the case scenario for the 2010 continental Field Training Exercise (FTX) Exercise AMANI Africa and the nature and level of civilian participation required in the exercise with view to determining the requisite training requirements (including aspects such as content, methodology and delivery).

Following from the above, TfP/ACCORD assisted in the co-ordination and implementation of an APSTA – EGT Consultative Workshop from 18 – 20 May 2009 in Accra, Ghana. One of the main aims of the workshop was to address critical gaps in civilian training on the continent and create partnerships between African and European training centres to address these gaps. Such a broad consultative workshop was necessary to ensure that African civilian training centres were able to contribute to and direct an African civilian needs analysis in support of European efforts to this end.
