On 11 March 2009, ACCORD participated in a conference in Jinja, Uganda, on HIV/AIDS and the African Military that was hosted by the African Union (AU) Commission, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces and supported by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS).
The conference aimed to evolve a common and comprehensive African approach in addressing the HIV/ AIDS pandemic in the uniformed services. As African countries develop their operational guidelines and procedures for deployment to peacekeeping through the African Standby Force (ASF), a process which enables militaries, regional economic communities (RECs) and the AU to agree to common standards and procedures for mitigating HIV/AIDS is critical. Angela Ndinga-Muvumba, Manager of Knowledge Production at ACCORD delivered a presentation titled “The prospects for an African HIV/Aids and military common policy”. Her presentation mapped out a policy path for a common strategy to manage HIV and AIDS in the continent’s defence forces.
