On 28 March 2024, ACCORD organised an online dialogue for its members in the ACCORD Network (ACCNET). The dialogue centred on the critical intersection of technology, gender equality, and peace and security. It highlighted how empowering women in conflict zones through technology can have a transformative impact.
Despite advancements in digital technology, women in many African countries still encounter disproportionate barriers to accessing and utilising digital tools and resources. Addressing this digital gap is crucial to creating an environment that supports the active participation of women in peace and security initiatives.
The event therefore delved into both the direct and indirect impacts of technology on peacebuilding, addressing broader digital inequalities. It featured insightful discussions from panellists who addressed various facets of the topic. Key points included highlighting the global importance of empowering women, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The platform also allowed for discussions and acknowledgement of the various barriers like social, economic, and educational factors hindering women’s participation in technology. Participants stressed the necessity of gender-responsive policies and collaborations in digital peacebuilding initiatives. They called for investing in digital skills at grassroots levels and advocating for bridging the digital divide to contribute towards the meaningful participation of women in peace processes. The dialogue underscored leveraging technology to amplify women’s voices and promote economic empowerment.
The dialogue concluded with a call for sustained efforts in empowering women through technology, advocating for inclusive policies, and advancing digital peacebuilding initiatives that may contribute towards sustainable peace and security in conflict-affected regions. ACCORD reiterated its commitment to providing spaces for further dialogue among ACCNET members to address pressing peace and security challenges.
