Gbowee Foundation Trains Women as Peace Brigades

The Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa in collaboration with the Women Peace and Humanitarian Fund and Spotlight Initiative are training women as “Peace Brigades” in five communities in Montserrado, Greater Monrovia, Todee, Careysburg, St. Paul River and Commonwealth. The training, which began in Todee, is being held under the theme: “Sustain the Peace”. Gbowee Peace Foundation Program Manager, David S. Konneh, said the project seeks keep the peace, hence the organization sought to involve women.
“We are training women in keeping the peace, to address violence against women in various communities. We will work in 75 communities in Monrovia and will be training 10 women in each of the five communities to address violence against women and girls’ cases,” said Mr. Konneh.

SADC Adopts Vision 2050

President Mokgweetsi Masisi August 17 participated in the 40th Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government which approved the bloc’s Vision 2050. At the Summit, SADC Executive Secretary Dr Stergomena Tax stated that the vision was based on a firm foundation of peace, security and democratic governance. She said it was premised on the three interrelated pillars of industrial development, market integration and infrastructure development with a view to social and human capital development. Dr Tax explained that the pillars recognised gender, youth, environment and climate change and disaster risk management as important cross-cutting components.

Cameroon Women Protest Insecurity, Gruesome Murder of Civilians

Dozens of women in Cameroon’s English-speaking southwest are protesting today against recent violence by suspected rebels. Women in the town of Buea say they are increasingly victims of the region’s four-year separatist conflict. About 70 women all wearing dark dresses sing as they march through the streets of the southwestern town of Buea on Tuesday. In the songs, they say they are tired of burying their children, husbands and recently, their sisters. The Cameroon Womens Peace Movement organized the peaceful protest. Its spokesperson Agbor Magdalene says they were outraged by the recent slaughter of a 32-year old woman in the southwestern town of Muyuka on August 11.
