ACCORD participated in the Capacity Building Workshop for Members of the Women Mediators across the Commonwealth (WMC) Network from 25-29 March 2019 in Abuja, Nigeria. ACCORD was represented by Ms. Irene Limo, who is a member of the WMC, following her accreditation to the network in 2018. WMC is an innovative new network linking women working in mediation across the globe, bringing together women mediators to exchange and learn from each other, and to advocate for the increased representation of women in peace processes globally.
The absence, or low level of women’s participation in mediation is the unfinished business of UNSCR 1325. ACCORD’s work contributes towards addressing this gap through training, support to policy development, applied research and networking. Participation in this initiative therefore enhanced ACCORD’s capacity and contributions towards supporting the implementation of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), more particularly on women and mediation. The workshop was delivered through simulations and experience sharing. The members further deliberated on the future of the WMC, contributing to shaping the agenda of the Network.
The Workshop was an opportunity for ACCORD to share experiences as well as identify good practices and lessons learnt towards contributing to strengthening the operationalization of networks of women mediators supported by ACCORD. Further, this contributed to ACCORD’s Strategic Pillar 3 on enhanced role of women in peace processes.
ACCORD remains committed to contributing to the strengthening of the capacities and role of women in mediation towards realising sustainable peace in Africa.
