ACCORD consults with women and conducts training to enhance women’s space, capacities and engagement in peace processes in Mozambique

Consultations

Giving women a platform to increase their contribution to ending conflict and creating sustainable peace and development in the country.

ACCORD co-facilitated consultation with women and conducted training on women’s engagement in peace processes in Mozambique from 4-8 September 2017.

Given the on-going dialogue process in Mozambique, there is need to give women a platform for engagement to further increase the space for them to contributing in ending the conflict and to sustain peace and development in the country. To this end, ACCORD is working with local actors to widen and increase the space, opportunities and the capacities for women in Mozambique to engage in dialogue processes and reconciliation. As part of this process, ACCORD in collaboration with the Foundation for Community Development (FDC) and Institute for Multiparty Democracy (IMD-Mozambique), held consultations with local women and conducted training towards enhancing the space, capacities and engagement of women in peace processes in Mozambique. The two workshops were held in Nampula province, Mozambique.

The consultations discussed how women have been involved in peace processes in the province and the challenges faced in this regard. The discussions emphasised the need to continue such efforts of looking at women’s engagement in peace processes more particularly at the grass root level.

Following the consultations with the women, ACCORD, FDC and IMD delivered a training to the FDC research team who will be involved in the baseline study that is being undertaken by the three organisations. The study seeks to identify the main gaps, challenges and opportunities for women’s participation and influence in peace and reconciliation process.

These efforts are part of a broader approach that seeks to bring women and other stakeholders from different sectors in society to discuss and chart a way forward on how to collectively work towards putting an end to the conflict in the country.

ACCORD continues to work with stakeholders in Mozambique in seeking to strengthen local capacities towards increased level of ownership and inclusive peace processes for sustainability in the settlements and agreements reached.
