Angela Ndinga-Muvumba, Senior Research Fellow at ACCORD and Doctoral Candidate at the University of Uppsala’s Department of Peace and Conflict Research (DPCR), attended the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) 4th Ordinary Summit of the Heads of State and Government (HoSG) and Special Session on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in the Great Lakes Region, in Kampala, Uganda on 15-16 December 2011.
The HoSG Summit resulted in adoption of the Declaration of the Heads of State and Government of the Member States of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region at the Fourth Ordinary Summit and Special Session on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) (Kampala Declaration of the ICGLR on SGBV). The declaration includes time-bound operative clauses, dealing with prevention, ending impunity and establishing support for victims of SGBV. The region’s leaders also agreed that the ICGLR’s Regional Inter-Ministerial Committee (RIMC) shall convene a Special Session on unemployment within the context of infrastructure development and investment at their next meeting in Bangui, Central African Republic (CAR), scheduled for May/June 2012.
ACCORD provided financial support to the ICGLR Secretariat to organize the pre-summit ICGLR Regional Experts’ meeting in Arusha, Tanzania from 1-2 November 2011, which Ndinga-Muvumba also participated in. In addition, ACCORD provided publications advice to the ICGLR Secretariat for the Kampala summit publication material.
