ACCORD Trustee Graça Machel was awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Barcelona, Spain, yesterday. Graça Machel is the chairperson of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI). Presenting the Award at an official ceremony, the Chancellor of the University stated that Graça Machel represents “justice, freedom and democracy.
In responding, Graça Machel noted that the event coincided with International Book Day and that there is still much to do in a world where millions survive on less than a dollar per day, more than 10 million children die before the edge of 5, and where millions are illiterate, two thirds of which are women.
