On Thursday, 9 June, ACCORD Senior Research Fellow Angela Ndinga-Muvumba served as a discussant at Sida’s launch of the 2011 World Bank Development Report. As the report focuses on the broad themes of conflict, security and development, Ndinga-Muvumba represented and promoted ACCORD’s philosophy and work on conflict resolution to a broad constituency of international stakeholders.
The launch brought together Sida Director General Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, EU Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs, on his first official visit to Sweden, and Minister for Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson. Sarah Cliffe, from the World Bank, presented the report to participants, and Dan Smith of International Alert chaired the panel discussion.
The ‘World Development Report 2011: Conflict, Security, and Development frames conflict and fragility as a major impediment to development. Ndinga-Muvumba presented her views on the report, while Carlos Castresana, former Commissioner, International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala addressed the gathering from a Central American perspective. Ndinga-Muvumba in her joint capacity with ACCORD and DPCR, subsequently contributed a short article, "The World Bank’s Conflict Assessment: Useful Basis for Debate and Reflection", based on her review of the Bank’s report to the Nordic Africa Policy Development Forum, an online NAI blog (available at: http://www.nai.uu.se/forum/index.xml?category=1271469611-2). The contribution is one of five articles commenting on and generating debate about the 2011 World Bank Development Report.
