ACCORD is to host a number of events to celebrate the launch of a study on coexistence titled Views and Visions of Coexistence in South Africa. The publication is the result of a study undertaken in partnership with the New York-based Coexistence Initiative (TCI) in 2003 and again in 2008.
On 11 March 2009, ACCORD participated in a conference in Jinja, Uganda, on HIV/AIDS and the African Military that was hosted by the African Union (AU) Commission, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces and supported by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS).
On 19 February 2009 Salomé van Jaarsveld, ACCORD’s Knowledge Production Officer, attended a symposium on Global Migration and its Impacts on Human Rights, Development and Security.
ACCORD has been invited to the Independent Electoral Commission briefing on the 2009 elections in South Africa. The briefing is to take place in Pretoria on the 21st of January and will be attended by Dr Shauna Mottiar, senior researcher in ACCORDs Knowledge Production Department.
Mr. Karanja Mbugua represented ACCORD and presented at the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy: Raising Awareness and Exploring the Role for Civil Society in Contributing to its Implementation workshop from 21-22 July 2008.
As part of the partnership arrangement between ACCORD and the Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University in Sweden, ACCORD participated in the Top Level Seminar on Peace and Security – TOPS, entitled “Challenges to Durable Peace after War in Africa”.
Shauna Mottiar, Senior Researcher in ACCORD’s Knowledge Production Department, attended a workshop at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in Pretoria on the 12th of March 2009. The workshop, convened by the HSRC’s Democracy and Governance Unit, aimed to design an appropriate methodology to respond to Xenophobia in South Africa.
Shauna Mottiar researcher at ACCORD’s Knowledge Production Department attended the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) 2009 elections briefing. The briefing was held in Pretoria on the 21st of January. Its objectives were to update civil society on the IEC’s election preparations as well as to explore how faith based and non governmental organizations can partner with the IEC to uphold the constitutional principles inherent in the electoral process and encourage the communities in which they work to do the same.
Within the framework of its partnership with the Department of Peace and Conflict Research (DPCR) at the University of Uppsala, Sweden, twice a year ACCORD co-organizes international Top-Level Seminars on Peace and Security (TOPS). Under the theme 'Challenges to Durable Peace', the second TOPS seminar for 2008 was held in Uppsala from 25 November until 5 December 2008.
From the 13-16 May 2008, Senior Researcher Jannie Malan, along with Karabo Rajuili from the Knowledge Production Department at ACCORD conducted community consultations in Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Muden in KwaZulu Natal.
On 27 and 28 February ACCORD Senior Researcher, Richard Kamidza, will participate in the “Africa Round Table on Investment in Africa” focusing on the role of South Africa’s corporates in host countries. Mr. Kamidza is expected to present a paper on “South Africa: A Willing Hegemony?”
